Balearics

Yacht charter in the Balearics

Four islands, each with its own pace.

A week in the Balearics

The Balearics are four very different islands. Ibiza and Formentera are social and bright, with very clear water. Mallorca has mountains, harbour towns and the most to do. Menorca is quiet, green and low key.

Ibiza and Mallorca are a long crossing apart, so I usually keep a week to one pair: Ibiza with Formentera, or Mallorca with Menorca. Then I choose the yacht for the calas and harbours we will actually use.

When to go

May and June
Quiet calas, long evenings, sea still fresh.
July and August
Hot, busy and lively, Ibiza most of all. Book early.
September and October
Warm sea and calmer anchorages. October can turn unsettled.

The tramontana

Summer here is mostly gentle, with sea breezes that rise in the afternoon. The wind to watch is the tramontana, a strong northerly that comes down from the Gulf of Lion. It hits the north coasts of Mallorca and Menorca hardest, and Menorca has little high ground to shelter behind.

When it blows, the south coasts stay calm and the plan moves there. One rule shapes every day at anchor: the seagrass meadows are protected, so yachts anchor on sand or use mooring buoys, and the captain plans the calas around that.

Three ways to spend a week

Starting points, not fixed plans. The final route follows the people on board and the forecast.

  1. Ibiza and Formentera

Short distances and very clear water. Days at anchor off Formentera, evenings in Ibiza.

Islands and harbours: Ibiza Town · Es Vedrà · Cala d'Hort · Cala Bassa · Espalmador · Formentera

Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell off the southwest coast of Ibiza, rising from clear blue water

  2. Mallorca's west and north coast

Mountains dropping into the sea, Port de Sóller for the evening and coves at the foot of the Tramuntana. It needs settled weather; in a northerly I take the south coast instead.

Islands and harbours: Palma · Port d'Andratx · Sa Dragonera · Port de Sóller · Sa Calobra

  3. Menorca

The quiet island. White-sand calas under pine on the south coast, and old harbour towns at either end.

Islands and harbours: Mahón · Cala Mitjana · Cala Macarella · Cala Turqueta · Ciutadella · Fornells

It pairs well with a start on Mallorca's north coast, a short crossing away.
